The son of Dr. Keith Koch, Dr. Ryan Koch plans to carry on the practice family name as orthodontic treatment, technology, and care continues to evolve and improve in the 2020s.

Ryan Koch completed his undergraduate studies at Canisius College (2016) in Buffalo, NY, and attended dental school at SUNY at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine (2020). He holds a Specialty Certificate in Orthodontics and a MS degree from the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine (2023). He is a member in good standing with several professional organizations, including the American Association of Orthodontists and the American Dental Association.

“Dr. Ryan” shared some insight on his upbringing, his father’s mentorship, his thoughts on the future of orthodontic treatment, and what he brings to Koch Orthodontics outstanding team composition.

*You’ve commented that you spent time growing up auditing your father at his practice. What specifically about orthodontics captured your attention? Does it afford something unique that other medical disciplines (especially oral health disciplines) do not?

At a young age I spent numerous hours in my father’s orthodontic practice learning about the profession and watching my father provide the utmost care to all of his patients.

During these interactions I was enlightened about the intricacies of the orthodontic profession and the attention to detail that is required in order to achieve a perfect smile and occlusion. All oral health disciplines require attention to detail but I think it is vitally important in the orthodontic profession.

This attention to detail is something that became ingrained in me during my time in orthodontic residency at the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine. Along with this, during my time in my father’s practice, I appreciated the artistry and skill involved in the orthodontic profession.

My dad’s expertise and treatment plans resulted in the creation of beautiful smiles and I look forward to bringing my own craftsmanship and skill into the practice to help treat all of our patients.

*There is plenty of commentary about how many advancements in orthodontic technology have been made in just the past few decades. For you personally – what excites you about the future of orthodontic technology, treatment and care? For child patients? For adults?

In previous years there have been numerous advancements in the field of orthodontics such as decreased treatment times, smaller and more esthetic brackets, and the need for fewer appointments. The one that I am most excited about is the advancement in the technology behind clear aligner treatment such as those seen in Invisalign and Spark Aligners.

The technology behind clear aligners has made vast improvements in the last ten years. Clear aligners now have an ability to treat more complex cases such as extraction and surgical cases as well as phase I adolescent treatment. These advancements have resulted in clear aligners being able to treat a wider variety of cases with more accuracy and decreased treatment times. I personally look forward to the further advancements of clear aligners.

*You pursued and earned your degree from the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine. What attracted you to their particular program? What valuable insight into the discipline of orthodontics did you learn?

What attracted me to the orthodontics residency at the University at Buffalo was the residency’s application of the most up-to-date technology including intraoral scanners, cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), and 3D printers. Additionally, the residency had a wide variety of successful faculty with different clinical backgrounds.

The combination of these two things resulted in a well-rounded program that I knew I wanted to be a part of.

*What do you personally hope to bring to the Koch Orthodontics practice, family, and patient base?

I plan to bring well-rounded personal care to each and every one of my patients at Koch Orthodontics. Additionally, I plan to utilize the most up-to-date treatment mechanics and technological advancements to maximize treatment efficiency. My experience in clear aligner
treatment and digital orthodontics separates me as a top provider.

My father genuinely cares about each and every one of his patients in the office at Koch Orthodontics. I know he looks forward to building new relationships with each of his new patients. I personally look forward to continuing this tradition and getting to know all of our patients in a family-friendly environment.

Dr. Keith Koch, Dr. Ryan Koch and the team at Koch Orthodontics are committed to setting the standard for orthodontic treatment and care.
