It’s a question we are always enthusiastic to answer: “If I have a removable orthodontic appliance, how do I clean it?”

We love to see our patients show initiative in keeping their orthodontic appliances clean during treatment. As with any aspect of orthodontic treatment, there are “Do’s” and there are “Don’ts.” Read on:

Properly Cleaning a Removable Orthodontic Retainer

Following the removal of your primary orthodontic appliances, you will be issued one orthodontic retainer. We say “one” because – if cared for properly and never misplaced, this retainer should last you a very long time.

Part of the retainer’s longevity is your commitment to keeping it clean. A “quick rinse once and a while” will not suffice.

  • Brush your retainer under cool water with a soft-bristled toothbrush (you should consider purchasing a toothbrush that will JUST serve as your appliance cleaner). A “paste” of baking soda and water to remove plaque is fine, but do not use toothpaste, mouthwash or any sort of chemical to clean the retainer.
  • You should commit to this “brush-cleaning” at least once a week.
  • Refrain from using hot water to clean your retainer, it may get warped.
  • Plaque and tartar build-up in the mouth may cause a retainer to develop a “yellowish” or otherwise discolored appearance. Try soaking the retainer in a combination of warm water and a small amount of hydrogen peroxide. Retainer cleaning tablets, such as the brand “Retainer Brite” are also okay to use. This “deep clean” should be done once a month.
  • An under-valued, under-practiced tip: Clean your retainer case! As with your retainer cleaning regiment, avoid using any chemicals.

Cleaning Invisalign Aligners

Although you are issued a fresh set of Invisalign aligners every few weeks, they still require a thorough cleaning. Plaque and other germs can collect on the aligners, and liquid (even if you believe you’ve completely swallowed) can “well” in the aligners. Pair this with inconsistent toothbrushing/flossing, and problems can result. Here are some best practices for cleaning your Invisalign aligners:

  • Rinse your aligners with cool water whenever you remove them. (Take a peak at our comprehensive post on Invisalign wear, removal and “tracking” here)
  • Brush your aligners with water and soft-bristled toothbrush (again, not the same one you use to brush your teeth). As with a retainer, refrain from using toothpaste or mouthwash as a cleaning agent.
  • For a deeper clean, Invisalign makes “Cleaning Crystals” to eliminate germs and odor. Cleaning with this particular agent involves 15 to 30 minute separate soaks for the top and bottom aligners, followed by a rinse with cool water.
  • Store your aligners in a protective case when they are not in your mouth, and commit to keeping that case clean, as well.

Your diligence in keeping your removable orthodontic appliances clean goes a long way in the success of your treatment. Don’t wait until your appliances become discolored or you experience an ‘unpleasant’ taste in your mouth to commit to regular cleaning and care.

Parents – do your part to reinforce these good habits in your child. The pay-off will be a healthy smile and a functioning bite that will last a lifetime!
